ARTIST STATEMENT
I create abstract artworks on canvas, panels and paper using mixed media techniques including, but not limited to acrylic, oil, gauche, sgraffito and printmaking. My approach to creating art is finding personal and metaphorical meaning in the experiences of my everyday life and expressing that meaning through abstraction. I am inspired by the simple things in life: a drive through the countryside, a day at the beach, or the innocence and freedom of preschematic drawings created by my son or my students. That simplistic inspiration becomes a deeper cognitive and intellectual quest to find meaning in the metaphor. For example, something as simple as a memory of driving over the Golden Gate Bridge sparked a series of bridge paintings that function as a metaphor of what a bridge represents: getting over something, moving forward, a passage of ideas, and a connection of people and places. It is through this finding of the metaphor that themes emerge which allow me to find a greater meaning in the simplicity of the moment.
